In an effort to ensure that we offer our patients with the resources and medical expertise they need for optimal musculoskeletal health, Genesis Orthopaedic and Spine features a diverse and in-depth team that has you covered from head to toe.

As of June 1, 2022, we’re pleased to announce the latest addition to this extensive team — physiatrist Dr. Kevin Dunn.

What is a physiatrist?

Another name for physiatry is physical medicine and rehabilitation, which is a branch of medicine that focuses on restoring a person’s ability to function, without pain, when they have a musculoskeletal issue.

A physiatrist goes beyond just treating a specific injury and/or disease by treating the whole patient using physical therapy and medications.

To start, a physiatrist performs a comprehensive review of your ailment as well as a review of your lifestyle and goals, and then works with you to address all of these areas.

As an example, if you have a problem in your knee or back that crops up frequently, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist works with you to relieve the immediate pain, and then devises a program that will prevent that pain from recurring.

Beyond that, if your goal is to also remain active, a physiatrist works with you so you can safely continue to pursue your activities.

Meet Dr. Dunn — our resident physiatrist

Recognizing the importance of physical medicine and rehabilitation, we’re pleased to introduce Dr. Dunn, who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as fellowship trained in sports medicine and spine health.

After completing a four-year degree at the University of Vermont, Dr. Dunn headed to Florida, where he embarked on a master’s degree program in sports medicine at the University of Miami. During this time, he was a student athletic trainer for the men’s football and soccer teams.

Thanks to this experience and his growing fascination with sports medicine, Dr. Dunn went on to medical school at St. George’s University and then earned a fellowship working under one of the best sports medicine specialists in the country — Dr. Gerard Malanga.

Through his work with Dr. Malanga, Dr. Dunn learned the myriad ways in which nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures can relieve pain and restore function in patients, helping them to achieve a better quality of life.

To give you an idea of the procedures, Dr. Dunn has extensive experience with:

  • Electrodiagnostic testing
  • Regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma therapyLipogems, and bone marrow aspirate
  • Advanced tendon and ligament procedures, including Tenex and TenJetⓇ
  • Ultrasound-guided injections, including epidural injections, facet joint injections, and sacroiliac joint injections

During his years as a practitioner, Dr. Dunn has helped his patients successfully overcome a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including spine problems, such as herniated discs and sciatica; sports injuries, such as meniscus tears and tendinitis; osteoarthritis; and strains and sprains.

If you’re struggling with an ongoing musculoskeletal issue and you’re not keen on the idea of surgery, we urge you to book an appointment with Dr. Dunn. To get started, contact one of our offices in West Orange or Westfield, New Jersey.
