What is a rotator cuff tear?

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their associated tendons, its main function is to stabilize the shoulder joint and grant it a wide range of arm functions, from lifting to rotating the arm. A rotator cuff tear is a common shoulder injury that involves a tear in one or more of said tendons.

There are two types of rotator cuff tears:

  • A partial tear, where the tear happens partly through the tendon
  • A full-thickness tear, where part of the tendon is detached from the bone:
  • Full-thickness incomplete tears: only some of the tendon is detached from the bone
  • Full-thickness complete tears: characterized by a complete detachment of the tendon from the bone.

What are the symptoms of a rotator cuff tear?

Over 50% of people who tear their rotator cuff don’t experience any symptoms. But they may include:

  • A dull, ache deep pain in the shoulder
  • Weakness or difficulty lifting or rotating the arm
  • Limited range of motion and trouble performing normal activities like combing hair or reaching their backs
  • Disturbed sleep as pain may be more noticeable when lying on the affected shoulder

What are the causes of a rotator cuff tear in New Jersey?

One of the main causes behind rotator cuff tears is aging, as body tissues wear down over time. That is why this type of tear is more common in people over the age of 60.

They too can happen due to an injury or collision during high-contact sports like rugby or football.

A rotator cuff tear can also be caused by wear and tear caused by repetitive actions like those involved in sports like tennis or baseball, activities such as house painting or carpentry or even performing intense physical labor.
