What Causes Scoliosis?

Scoliosis develops for different reasons, and understanding the cause is essential for determining the right treatment approach. The condition can be classified into three main categories based on its underlying cause:

Idiopathic Cause

This is diagnosed when no specific cause can be identified, accounting for about 80 percent of all cases. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common form diagnosed in New Jersey and nationwide. It typically appears during adolescence; the exact reason why the spine begins to curve remains unclear.

Congenital Cause

This type results from spinal abnormalities that develop before birth, when one or more vertebrae don’t form properly during fetal development. Because these structural malformations are present from birth, congenital scoliosis is usually detected at a younger age than the idiopathic type.

Neuromuscular Cause

This form develops as a secondary condition related to neurological or muscular diseases that affect the body’s ability to support the spine. Conditions that can lead to neuromuscular scoliosis include cerebral palsy, spinal cord trauma, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, and spina bifida.

Recognizing the Signs: Symptoms of Scoliosis

Parents and caregivers in New Jersey should monitor children and teenagers for the following signs, as early intervention can prevent curve progression and the need for more invasive treatments:

• Shoulders are uneven – one or both shoulder blades may stick out
• The head is not centered directly above the pelvis
• One or both hips are raised or unusually high
• Rib cages are at different heights
• Waist is uneven
• The appearance or texture of the skin overlying the spine changes (dimples, hairy patches, color abnormalities)

• The entire body leans to one side
