What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis refers to the condition that makes the spine curve abnormally to the side, it typically forms “C” or “S” shapes. Although it can occur at any age, it’s most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents from age 10 to 15.
There are different types of scoliosis:
- Idiopathic scoliosis, the most common form, has no known cause. This type of scoliosis is heavily associated with growth spurs.
- Congenital scoliosis which means a baby is born with a malformation of the vertebrae
- Neuromuscular scoliosis can develop as a result of conditions such as cerebral palsy of muscular dystrophy which affect the muscles and nerves that support the spine
- Degenerative scoliosis is commonly seen in older adults as the spine wears down over time
